Smart home tech lets you control your home remotely

These six Verizon accessories give you the power to adjust the thermostat and control door locks, appliances and lights right from your smartphone.

Thanks to advances in smart home technology, everything from your doors to your smoke detector can be programmed from your tablet or smartphone.

Here’s how your home can run better than ever before:

1. Nest® Learning Thermostat™

What it does: Lets you control the temperature in your home even when you’re away, helping conserve energy and money.

Killer feature: It’s a thermostat that programs itself. Nest will learn your patterns and weather forecasts and make adjustments accordingly. Plus, it provides monthly energy reports via email.

2. Nest® Protect™

What it does: Sends alerts to your smartphone if carbon monoxide or smoke is detected (or if the batteries are running low). With the Nest app, you can tap into even more features, such as silencing your alarm when away.

Killer feature: If it detects a full-blown fire, the Nest Protect flashes red, sounds the alarm and tells you it’s time to head outside. Just a smoking toaster or burnt popcorn? If it’s only a little bit of smoke, the alarm glows yellow as a precaution.

3. Nest Cam™

What it does: Sends alerts in case something happens, and shows footage of your home live in super-clear 1080p HD. It also records what’s happening.

Killer feature: With the mic and speaker, you can hear what’s going on in the room and even speak using the Nest app.

4. Canary All-in-One Home Security

What it does: Canary detects new or unusual movements in your home and sends notifications with HD video to your smartphone. But it can also monitor air quality, temperature and humidity.

Killer feature: Similar to the Nest Learning Thermostat, the more you use the Canary, the more it understands and adapts to your home’s daily routine.

5. Belkin WeMo Insight Switch

What it does: Did you remember to turn the iron off before heading to work? No worries. The Belkin WeMo Insight Switch lets you turn off home electronics—including appliances—from your device.

Killer feature: Provides information on how much energy your electronics are using.

6. Kwikset® Kevo™

What it does: When installed on your door, it will sense your smartphone or the Kevo key fob via Bluetooth® and unlock at the touch of your hand—great for when you’re juggling bags of groceries. Multiple levels of encryption keep your home secure.

Killer feature: Never leave a key under the mat for emergencies. You can send your dog walker, friends or relatives an electronic key with the Kevo app.
